Pedals and Profits

We’re excited to announce something kind of crazy:

  • Shawn, Colton, and Darrell, three key members of the Apiary Fund team, are going to try to ride bicycles across America from Pacific to Atlantic.
  • During the whole trip, Shawn can only spend what he makes from trading currencies in a $25,000 Level 2 Apiary Fund account.
  • That includes gas, food, and lodging for him and his WIFE AND 8 KIDS following in a bus!

The goal will be to put the question “Can I trade for a living” to the test. These are just 3 regular guys. The riding and trading won’t be easy. We’re calling it “Pedals and Profits.”

Their journey will begin at the Pacific Ocean in Washington on July 14th. They’ll have 90 days to try to make it to the end with a Traders’ Summit in Boston October 6th, 7th, and 8th. We’re excited to have a Summit on the east coast and would love to see as many of you there as possible, especially since it will be the big finale of this 3 month cycling endeavor.

They’ll be blogging and posting video updates from the road at pedalsandprofits.com including recordings of daily trading sessions, win or lose. That means You can follow along online, or even meet up in person at one of the many events along the way. It’s an enormous undertaking and nothing like it has ever been done before, so they’ll certainly appreciate your support and sharing it with your friends! Good luck, guys!

Photos from January 2014

This Summit was all about systems: the rules that determine when you get in and out of a trade. Shawn gave a presentation explaining the importance of having a “trading playbook” filled with various strategies that work in different market conditions. When the conditions change, you switch to the right strategy for it.

On the first day, Todd showed a divergence strategy, Nate explained a pullback strategy, and Jeff started explaining how he programs decisions based on a field of possible outcomes. Tuesday began with live trading from Nate and Todd, followed by a continuation of Jeff’s advanced system. Ron showed the rules of a Bollinger band trade, Todd explained a scalping strategy using Renko charts, and Shawn gave a presentation on creating your trading business. At the end of the day, there was a Q&A session with all the presenters. The final day began with some competitive live trading between Jeff and Shawn. Ron showed a variation of the pullback trade specific to the 5 minute GBPUSD and Shawn explained a concept of support and resistance that he has deemed “Lucas Lines.” Nate gave his experience with the reality of trading for a living and Jeff wrapped up his advanced system of planning for a bell curve of probability.

January 2014 Traders’ Summit Announced!

January 2014

Registration is now open for our fifth Traders’ Summit. We’re taking the show on the road for the first time and headed to Las Vegas! The Summit will be held in a convention room of the Springhill Suites across from the Las Vegas Convention Center. We’ll be meeting Monday January 20th through Wednesday January 22nd, 2014.

The theme of the last Summit was the Trader Development Program with presentations each corresponding to one of the 12 courses. For this Summit, the focus will be on Trading Systems. We’ll be focusing on building your trading playbook by giving specific strategies, their rules for entry and exit, and when they’re most effective.

Las Vegas should be a great venue as it will be that time of winter when we all want to escape to somewhere just a little warmer (hopefully). With the endless entertainment and nightlife, there will be plenty to do after we wrap up each afternoon. Don’t party too hard, though. We’ve got early morning live trading to do!

We really look forward to seeing each and every one of you there as we reunite with familiar faces and welcome new ones to this invaluable experience!

September 2013 Summit Recap

It was great to see everyone come out to the September 2013 Traders’ Summit. This time the theme was money management and we focused on having each presentation correlate to the 12 courses of the Trader Development Program.

Monday was Labor Day and we started off with our forecast game where everyone submits their guess for where the market will be at the end of the event. Shawn gave a “Welcome to the Hive” presentation explaining the concept, purpose, and current state of the fund itself. Everyone introduced themselves and then we got into the meat and potatoes of the courses. First, Nate went over the basics of the Forex market and why transactions are even happening in the first place. Next, Ben showed some tips and tricks for solving common problems and working quickly in the MetaTrader software. Shawn then explained the Benjamin Formula and how to place trades using it. At the end of the day, Nate gave a presentation of common patterns that show up in price action and whether each is a continuation or reversal.

Tuesday started early at 6am with live trading by Shawn and Jeff. Jeff got off to a slow start, blaming everything on Mike for wanting a screen recording, while Shawn quickly pulled ahead in profits, ending the session with over $200. Darrell then presented some basic common indicators and the signals to look for in each, after which Todd detailed exactly how he trades with his system. Jeff then spent the remainder of the day describing how he analyzes past averages to calculate probability frontiers.

On Wednesday, we started early again with live trading by Nate and Todd. Shawn also traded in the back of the room for lunch money. Ron then gave a presentation on money management, followed by a presentation on trading psychology and the investor profile by Shawn. Jeff then took a large portion of the day explaining the interrelationship of governments, oil, and currencies, and how to place trades based on correlations between them. At the end, Ron explained the process of transitioning to a funded account and common pitfalls to avoid in the process. The results of the forecast game were astounding as one trader managed to predict the price within a half a pip!

Example Presentation: Currency Wars

In this recording from the February 2013 Traders’ Summit, Economist and Head Trader Shawn Lucas explains his view of the current economic climate. He starts from the basics of how exchange rates are determined and the effect that currency valuation has on import and export. He then goes on to explain why governments devalue currency and what that could potentially mean for inflation. Ultimately, he explains what we can do as investors to avoid the potentially negative effects of traditional investing strategies while still making your money work for you.

September 2013 Dates Announced!

September 2013

The Apiary Fund has decided it’s high time for another Summit! This will be our fourth gathering since we’ve had so much success with our previous events establishing camaraderie and getting to know each other as a group …and of course learning to trade successfully. We’ll meet together again September 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in 2013 for three full days of forex training and trading. September 2nd is Labor Day, which should make it easier for folks to attend, since they won’t miss as much work.

We’ll start on a Monday so that we can get up early with some live trading demonstrations on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. If you haven’t been to one of our previous events, it’s a real treat to watch several professional traders at the front of the room describing what they see as they enter and exit positions in the live market in front of you.

We’ve had great positive feedback from previous summit participants, and we’re excited to see some familiar faces and new ones, too. If you register early, you and your spouse/friend can join us for only $495. A price so low for so much is unheard of in the seminar training world, but we want to remove as many barriers to success as we can. We know that the relationships and tangible learning will be worth it.

Reserve your seat today to join us and check out the visitor guide for other things to do while you’re in the area. We look forward to shaking your hand!

February 2013 Summit Recap

Well, we’ve done it again! A third successful summit full of instruction, training, and live trading.

The first day we opened up at 9:00 with a presentation from Shawn on the “State of the Hive” and the success metrics by which the Apiary Fund measures itself. Then, we had Todd show us how to use Renko charts, and why we should or shouldn’t use them. We had a message from Gary about how individuals can refer a friend to the Apiary Fund using the rewards program followed by a presentation about the Investor Profile by Darrell. Colton then described some updates to the site including the availability of Trading Groups and individual profiles for associates. The day ended with a Q&A session on all topics trading and corporate.

The second day started not-so-bright and early at 6 AM with live trading by a handful of professionals at the front of the room. As they saw a trade setup appear, they would call out their entry and reason for getting in. They would then describe their thinking as they managed and ultimately exited the trade. Although they each had different methodologies, they all ended up profitable from the same market. Afterward, we had a presentation from Ron, who is a Risk Manager for the Apiary Fund. He detailed the metrics he looks for and the process each individual takes moving from a simulated to live money funded account. Todd then gave a presentation he named “From Boohoo to Woohoo” about managing emotions and psychology in trading. Nate showed the process of calculating price and time cycles that he uses in his trading and how to use those calculations to determine better exit strategies. During lunch, Todd broadcasted a “Live from the Summit” webinar to report on how things were going to the Apiary Fund members who weren’t able to attend. When everyone came back, Shawn talked about the hot topics in economics including the “Currency Wars” happening between countries and their respective central banks. One of the most interesting things from this presentation was the explanation of why countries try to devalue their own currencies to stimulate export activity. Finally, Jeff explained the Computer Assisted Trading Tools he designs and uses in his own trading.

Wednesday, the final day, opened up with more live trading in the markets, this time with a twist: Whatever profits Shawn made would go toward pizza for lunch. He opened up with a couple winning trades in a row before getting some choppy whipsaws that took away some of his profits. Finally, the market started trending again and Shawn put a few more positions on as trades went in his favor. Just as the live trading session was wrapping up, the hotel’s internet connection failed leaving everyone in the dark for a few minutes. When service returned, Shawn was able to close his positions for a net of 110 pips for the day. Pizza!

Following live trading, Jameson explained the program of Trading Partners available to Trader Development Program members. Then Shawn went over position sizing using a game of chance and the Benjamin Formula. Jeff used his custom-designed CAT Tools and finally, there were closing ceremonies.

Watch an Example Presentation

Here’s Shawn Lucas’ opening presentation from the Fall 2012 Traders’ Summit. In it he goes over the concept and purpose of the Apiary Fund, something he takes very seriously. He considers the unique crowdsourced approach to money management to be fairly philanthropic, since it provides otherwise unobtainable financial opportunities.

This was the first presentation before 3 days full of instruction ranging from concepts, to systems, to psychology, to live trading in the market. Recordings of all the presentations are available to members of the Trader Development Program, so check them out in the full library of video clips!

September 2012 Summit Recap

Fall 2012

In short, it was a success!

First, Shawn gave a presentation on the Apiary Fund and the concept of a purpose-driven rather than profit driven company. Next, Todd detailed his personal trading system involving a stochastic, MACD, ATR, and moving average envelope. After that, we had a great presentation about the traders’ “playbook” and how systems can be used in reaction to price action. We also had introductions by everyone attending and everyone explained where they come from and what they do, including each employee’s role.

The second day, we started out early with a live trading session featuring Shawn, Todd, and Nate. During the 2 hours, they each took turns explaining the trades they were getting into and out of. Shawn made quite a profit in a short time, explaining his methodology the whole way. After that, Ron went over the process each trader takes through the transition from virtual to live funded account. Then, Gary talked about the Rewards program where traders can refer their friends to the fund and help get them involved on the right track. Next, Shawn presented about “The Living Markets” and explained why the phenomenon of support and resistance takes place based on a bid/ask demonstration. Curtis gave a presentation on how traders can stay in the right mindset when trading. Finally, we finished off the day with a graphic demonstration from Mike where he built a flowchart of a breakout trading system.

On the last day, we started early again with another success-riddled live trading session. This time, there was some friendly competition between the 4 presenting traders. Following that, we had introductions from each of the Apiary Fund’s trading partners who help mentor individuals on their path to funding. Then we played the “Bee Game” which explains position sizing in an interactive way. Nate then explained price and time cycles through his baseball analogy and demonstrated a system which uses them. Finally, we exchanged closing remarks and everyone shared what they had learned.

Here’s some photos! Check them out and come to the next summit!
